Rejuvenating Blackpool.

Blackpool has been revitalised, new chain shops, modern art and has generaly been 'cleaned up'. By doing this they will attract more tourism , this will bring more money into the town and anable then to do more projects like this.
Here are some examples:

Blackpool Advert

Blackpool Advert:
The advert sets out to make you think it is set in Paris. They show parts of the Blackpool tower, making you think it is the Eiffel tower, it has french dialogue, lots of romance and only talks of french food. It makes me wonder why they need to make Blackpool look like Paris, why do they need to cover it up? This makes me think that Blackpool is so bad that they need to hide it! Personally a honest advert of a couple having fish, chips and a can of coke on the sea front with the rides in the background would have encouraged me more to go. The Tourist board should have advertised Blackpool as a Great British seaside holiday, and not somthing it isnt.

Exam Question, Bedzed

Explain why a naimed settlement you have studied can be considered to be sustainible:

Bedzed is considered to be sustainible because it is completely 'Eco friendly'.
Its main energy suply comes from burning wood chips for central heating and solar power provides water heating. Not only do they use renewable sources of energy, they also stop carbon emittions by deliberately limiting the amount if parking spaces and people with a carbon neutral car have priority on parking spaces.
They have been succesful this shceme, and have achieved these results:
Hot water consumption was 57% less
Electrical power usage was 25% less and residents car milage was reduced by 65%.
They have also one many other awards.
The settlements also produce almost zero waste products and gases, the buildings deliberately have lots of windows, allowing lots of sunlight in to the buildings and this will also produce heat; reducing emitions of central heating.
I think that these deductions in energy requirment will continue in the next few years because they have been very succesful and i think that people will realise there potiential in emition reduction. They may be exspencive to run but people will wake up to climate change and start to buy these 'Eco friendly' homes.

The Zabaleen

Who are they?
they are a small comunity of coptic christians, a christian religeon in Eygpt, Who collect rubbish from the city of Cairo to feed it to thier pigs.

Where do they live?
A part Cairo known as Garbage City.

How do they make a living out of rubbish?
They cheaply buy or take for free peoples rubbish. Organic matter is fed to live stock, and other materials are reused or sold, like metal and glass.

In what ways to the Zabaleen offer a sustainible solution to waste disposal?
They make a living buy taking away and sorting a small amount of the citys problem and use or recycle almost everything, This means that instead of more and more waste building up, its just goes round in a cylcle.

What problems do they face?
The city is constantly exspanding, this means more people and more rubbish from the people, I think that they wont be able to keep up eventually, but for now they are doing a very useful job. there is also a much bigger problem in the city, many of Cairos dwellers are of the muslim religeon and they dont believe that messing around with rubbish is a very exceptable thing to do, this results in the Zabaleen not having as many helpers.

The Programa Favela Bairrio

What is it?
Favela Barrio is a project that is being used as a tool to promote urban and social integration of people who live in Rio De Janeiro and to stop the process of urban decline that follows the growth of low income settlements in third world countries.

How much is it, and who pays for it?
$600 million, IDB and the municipal goverment

Infrastructure improvements:
They say that their quality of life has improved, they have clean water and people respect their own and other peoples homes and possestions.

Example Of Comunity Projects:
They are planning physical infrastructure projects and are discussing the social services that will be provided for the Favela, based on the program's limits it can spend on each family. They say that community involvement will reduce friction when relocating families for the space they need for road projects and for removing families that are living in a high risk area.

Why Has The Scheme Been Succesful?
I think that the scheme has been succesful because there is alot of community involvement, this will put the people working on the project on the same level as the homeless in Favelas and allows the families to trust them. It has also been successful because all they had to do was get the people to trust them, then things would be much easier from then on, this is because the people would get on board and get involved.
